The Relaxation in Powering Down

Its time for some peace of mind.

During a recent staff meeting my team and I discussed the changes we have seen in the spa regarding cell phone use. We reflected on the impact they have on us as employees. As employees, we have found that cell phones may keep us too connected to our personal life while on the clock through constant texting and facebook updates. We also became aware of how they may be slowing us down because of connecting to the internet in between sessions instead of focusing on our timing. When we are on our phones during downtime we also tend to communicate less with our colleagues, therefore we are not sharing or learning from each other. Together we reviewed some facts about the average American’s cell phone use:

Facts

*The average U.S. smartphone owner does spend about an hour of meaningful time on their device a day, while the rest of the time is consumption. (surfing the internet for nothing, facebook, games)

*On average the total time spent on a phone a day is about 162 minutes. Over 2.5 hours a day. This averages to 912 hours a year!

*84% of cell phone users claim they could not go a single day without their device.

*67% of cell phone owners check their phone for messages, alerts, or calls, even when there is no notification of an update. Studies indicate some mobile device owners check their devices every 6.5 minutes.

*88% of U.S. consumers use mobile devices as a second screen even while watching television.

*50% of cell owners sleep with their phone next to their bed because they wanted to make sure they didn’t miss any calls.

*Some researchers have begun labeling “cell phone checking” as the new yawn because of its contagious nature.

We then reviewed what happen when we turn off our cell phones. Below are some benefits.

Benefits of POWERING Down!

  1. Powering-down helps remove unhealthy feelings of jealousy, envy, and loneliness. Researchers recently discovered that one in three people felt worse after visiting Facebook and more dissatisfied with their lives.
  2. Powering-down combats the fear of missing out.Scientifically speaking, the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) has been recognized as a recently emerging psychological disorder brought on by the advance of technology.
  3. Powering-down creates solitude which is hard to find in an always-connected world. Solitude grounds us to the world around us. It provides the stillness and quiet required to evaluate our lives and create goals.
  4. Powering-down at work creates more productivity. A lot of times we need technology to get our jobs done but there are many times when we need to focus all of our attention to a meeting, a document, a customer, a colleague, training. etc…….By giving tasks our full attention we are bound to complete work projects and interactions more efficiently, timely and to a higher standard than when distractions on our cell phones such as texts, Facebook, emails, videos etc., get in the way.
  5. Powering-down engages us to the life happening right in front of us. These experiences will never repeat themselves and it is important to be connected and aware of what is in front of us.
  6. Powering-down promotes creation over consumption. Essentially, most of our time is spent in one of two categories: consuming or creating. The time we spend in front of technology is spent consuming (playing video games, browsing the Internet, watching movies, listening to music). When we power down we are more likely to move, play, exercise, cook, walk, read books, etc…….

After we reviewed this information we agreed that in the spa industry powering down our cell phones is essential to for us to be mindful during our workday. Click Here are some other steps to take to become mindful. It is important for us to find solitude and a peace of mind in order to give fully to our clients during their massage, facial or mud wrap.
Disconnecting from our social media and various other cell phone distractions promotes quality relaxation in our spa environment. We need to model being present in our line of work so that clients feel cared for.
